Cees Braakman
Born in Utrecht in 1917, Cees Braakman began his design career at the age of 17 at Pastoe, where his father worked as a designer. In 1948, he became the company’s director and designer.
In 1947, Braakman traveled to the United States to study design methods and manufacturing processes. He was particularly inspired by the work of Charles and Ray Eames, which had a lasting influence on his approach to design. After returning to the Netherlands, he continued as director and designer at Pastoe, introducing early modern designs that explored bent plywood techniques, including the SB series of 1950, as well as new collections of modern wooden furniture. Through the development of new furniture lines, he helped establish a fresh identity for the company’s catalog.

At the time, the Netherlands was undergoing large-scale postwar reconstruction influenced by modernist and social housing architecture. Within this context, Braakman designed numerous pieces suited to compact living spaces, combining functionality with a refined modern aesthetic.
